Important and ancient Binji mask (Kuba sub-group), Democratic Republic of Congo.
The shape of the mask follows the known structure of the Kuba masks (strong nose, mouth projected forward, protruding cheekbones)
Wood with a black patina, engraved geometrical designs enhanced with kaolin decorate the whole mask, traces of vegetable glue on the eyebrows that must have fixed seeds... Raffia link at the base of the mask. The inside of the mask has been well hollowed out and bears beautiful traces of carrying.
